ARRESTED MAN FACES DOMAIN NAME CHALLENGE8th September, 2003
Philadelphia man John Zuccarini, 53, has been arrested and charged with one count of registering misleading domain names on the internet.
Zuccarini is described as a well-known cybersquatter, who has lost a large number of domain name disputes under the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) in connection with, among others, so-called 'typo domains' - misspelt versions of well known trade marks - which he pointed to various pornographic sites.
The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently challenged Zuccarini's practice of "mousetrapping" visitors to his sites. According to the FTC, Zuccarini registered 6,000 or so mispellings of popular web sites. Once consumers arrived, the websites to which Zuccarini had pointed the domain names were programmed to take control of the Internet browser, holding consumers captive while they were forced to view websites advertising various products including online gambling, psychic services, and adult entertainment. Closing one window simply caused several more windows to open.
